Whenever I was in town in late July and August, I would head over to Inniswood Metro Gardens. In what began as a casual attempt to photograph hummingbirds evolved into The Hummingbird Project lasting 3 weeks.

My portfolio lacked some good images of hummingbirds, so I thought I’d take advantage of the cutting garden, which was in full bloom. As it turned out, the ruby-throated hummers would frequent the beds in search of nectar and insects, darting in and out on their feeding rounds. I couldn’t believe my good fortune! They seemed to pose for me at times. For this image, the surrounding zinnias provide for an impressionistic feel.
